House endorses NGEC nominees as MPs demand action on Gender Based Violence

The National Assembly has approved the appointment of Hon. Rehema Dida Jaldesa as the Chairperson and Mr. Michael Nzomo Mbithuka as a Member of the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC). Lawmakers challenged the new leadership to revitalize the Commission and deliver on its mandate of promoting gender equality and equity.

Speaking during the debate, Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah emphasized the need for the NGEC to become more proactive in addressing gender issues. “In the past, this Commission has been unresponsive. It has been lacklustre. With the new leadership, we hope Hon. Jaldesa and Mr. Mbithuka will bring life to the Commission and ensure it fulfills its mandate,” said Hon. Ichung’wah.

The NGEC was established to promote gender equality, protect the rights of marginalized groups, and monitor the integration of gender in national development. Several MPs underscored the importance of equipping the Commission with adequate resources to achieve its goals.

“As we observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we must ensure this Commission is well-funded to support its critical work,” stated Hon. Millie Odhiambo. She further called for increased support for emerging female leaders, adding, “We must stand behind women aspiring for leadership positions.”

Hon. Naomi Waqo expressed confidence in the leadership of Hon. Jaldesa, describing her as a seasoned human rights activist. “She will bring new energy and focus to the NGEC. The Commission has made strides, but there is still much more it can achieve,” said Hon. Waqo.

While supporting the motion, Hon. Rindikiri Mugambi reminded the House of the need to balance support for both genders. “Gender equality includes addressing the needs of both the boy child and the girl child. We must also tackle issues such as the resurgence of female genital mutilation,” he noted.

Hon. Peter Kaluma urged the new leadership to prioritize tackling pressing gender-related issues.

“Commissions like the NGEC should not be seen as retirement homes. The appointees must bring energy and address critical issues such as femicide and cyberbullying,” said Hon. Kaluma.

Hon. Irene Mayaka and Hon. Sarah Korere, called on legislators to sensitize their constituencies about gender-based violence. “As leaders, let us take the 16 Days of Activism to our counties. The NGEC must also take its role seriously and be visible in addressing these issues,” urged Hon. Mayaka.
