Speaker hosts Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Kenya
Today, I hosted H.E. Henriette Geiger, the Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Kenya, who paid me a courtesy visit in my office at Parliament Buildings.
During our meeting, we engaged in an insightful conversation regarding the Economic Partnerships Agreement (EPA) between Kenya and the EU, focusing on trade in goods, fisheries, agriculture, as well as economic and development cooperation.
The EPA aims to ensure sustained market access for Kenyan exports on a duty-free quota basis, while gradually reducing tariffs on EU goods, among other provisions.
I expressed my appreciation for the agreement's potential to positively impact Kenya's economy and updated the Envoy on the National Assembly's progress in ratifying the document for the benefit of the nation.
Reflecting on my involvement in facilitating easier access to the EU export market, I emphasized the agreement's alignment with our mutual interests and its potential to foster trade growth between Kenya and the EU, our second-largest trading partner.
Hon. James Gakuya, Chairperson of the Committee on Trade, outlined plans to facilitate public participation on the document as mandated by law next week.
