His Excellency Hon. William Ruto has emphasized the urgent need to expedite East African integration during his speech at the opening of the 3rd sitting of the 3rd session of the 5th East African Legislative Assembly at the Senate Chamber in Nairobi.

President Ruto highlighted significant progress in East African Community (EAC) integration, attributing much of it to the diligent efforts of the assembly. He reiterated the collective commitment to the vision of a prosperous, competitive, secure, stable, and politically united East Africa.

"Key achievements of the community," President Ruto highlighted, "include advancements in the customs union, common market, monetary union, and political federation pillars of integration." He added, "Progress has been made in reducing trade barriers, enhancing regional trade efficiency, and facilitating free movement of goods and people."

Acknowledging the importance of peace, stability, and security, President Ruto emphasized their foundational role in fostering growth and prosperity. He also underscored the significance of addressing challenges such as non-tariff barriers, trade disputes, and climate change while advocating for greater private sector involvement in the integration process.

"Looking ahead," President Ruto stated, "there are several challenges for the assembly, including aligning the integration agenda with broader African transformational paradigms, fostering innovation in hi-tech fields, and supporting initiatives such as the African Leaders' Nairobi Declaration on climate action."

Furthermore, President Ruto called upon the assembly to actively participate in the forthcoming World Bank Group’s International Development Association (IDA) Summit, hosted by Kenya. The summit aims to secure increased financing for development in Africa and the Global South, with President Ruto urging assembly members to contribute ambitiously to this endeavour.

In his closing remarks, President Ruto expressed gratitude for the opportunity to address the assembly and encouraged fruitful deliberations during the session. He extended a warm welcome to all delegates, inviting them to experience Kenya's hospitality.
